Trip Permits

Trip and fuel permits are temporary permits that allow you to travel through a state in which your vehicle is not registered (apportioned), and/or when you do not have an IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) sticker on the vehicle.

When do I need a trip or fuel permit?

You need a temporary registration ("trip") permit when you will be leaving your base state and you meet any of the following criteria:

  • your vehicle weighs more than 26,000 pounds
  • yours is a commercial vehicle with 3 or more axles on the ground, regardless of weight
  • yours is a commercial vehicle weighing more than 10,000 pounds (Arizona/Nevada)
  • yours is a commercial vehicle, regardless of weight (California)

  • You need a temporary fuel permit when you will be leaving your base state, your vehicle isn't enrolled in the IFTA program and you meet any of the following criteria:

  • your vehicle weights more than 26,000 pounds
  • yours is a commercial vehicle with 3 or more axles on the ground, regardless of weight
